ElevenLabs review: great voices, a credit meter to watch

ElevenLabs review: great voices, a credit meter to watch

ElevenLabs sells AI audio: text to speech, voice cloning, dubbing, music, and voice agents that answer calls. Marketing teams buy it for ad voiceovers, localized video and inbound call handling. The voices are the best-reviewed part. The billing is the part that catches people out, because one shared credit pool funds almost every creative product.

ElevenLabs is the strongest voice generation on the market by reputation, and the weakest at making its own cost predictable. Buy it for output quality. Budget for it carefully.

This review reads the vendor's own pricing pages, product pages and public user ratings as of October 13, 2026. It is a documentation review: we did not run the product ourselves.

  • Buy it if you produce ad voiceover, video, podcast or localized creative often enough to use a four-figure credit allowance each month.
  • Buy it if you want inbound voice agents and are comfortable adding separate LLM and telephony bills on top.
  • Skip it if you need two or three voiceovers a quarter; the free tier plus a one-off paid month covers that.
  • Skip it if you need a clean, flat, forecastable monthly line item for finance.
  • Watch out for promotional first-month pricing. The Starter card shows $6 struck through and $1 for the first month at 83% off, and Creator shows $22 struck through and $11 at 50% off, both labelled "Until Oct 18" (pricing page, checked October 13, 2026).

What ElevenLabs actually sells

ElevenLabs splits itself into three product lines on its own pricing page: ElevenCreative, ElevenAgents and ElevenAPI. Each has a separate plan table, and the first two bill on different units.

ElevenCreative is the content side: text to speech, speech to text, voice changer, voice isolator, sound effects, music, dubbing, Studio projects, and image and video generation. The homepage advertises a library of "10,000+ voices" (checked October 13, 2026).

ElevenAgents is the conversational side: voice and chat agents with a workflow builder, knowledge base, telephony and analytics. It is billed by call minutes, not by credits.

ElevenAPI is the same models behind an API. The homepage lists Eleven Flash at "75ms latency" and says the text-to-speech API models support "29+ languages" (checked October 13, 2026).

The current flagship voice model is Eleven v4, announced September 28, 2026. We cover what it changes, what it costs and who should wait in our separate Eleven v4 review; this article stays on the platform and its bill.

One number does not line up, and it matters before you promise a client a market. The homepage advertises "90+ languages". The plan comparison table on the pricing page lists 74 languages on every tier. Both pages read October 13, 2026.

Who it fits, and who should skip it

This is a production tool, not a growth platform. It fits teams that already ship audio or video and want to ship more of it, in more languages, without booking a studio.

  • Performance marketers testing many voiceover variants of the same video ad.
  • Agencies localizing one hero campaign into several markets instead of reshooting it.
  • Course and membership businesses narrating lesson audio, alongside a platform like the one in our Teachable review.
  • Newsletter and content teams turning long posts into audio versions, next to the tools in our best newsletter platforms guide.
  • Social teams producing daily short-form voiceover, scheduled through something our Later review or Metricool review covers.
  • Support and sales teams piloting an inbound voice agent before committing to a full contact-centre product.

Who should skip it, honestly:

  • Anyone producing audio occasionally. Occasional use is what the free tier is for, and 10,000 credits a month is roughly 10 minutes of speech.
  • Teams that need a fixed monthly cost. Credits, LLM usage and telephony are three separate meters.
  • Anyone expecting it to do marketing work. It generates assets; it does not route leads, send email or rank pages.

What the free plan covers, and where it stops

The free plan is generous enough to judge the output and far too small to run on.

Per the pricing page, checked October 13, 2026, it gives 10,000 credits a month across text to speech, speech to text, sound effects, voice design, music and image generation.

That allowance is listed as roughly 10 minutes of text to speech. The comparison table prices extra minutes on the free tier at $0.36, the highest per-minute rate on the ladder.

The limit that really decides things is not the credits. Free is the only tier without a commercial licence, and published ad creative needs one, which starts on Starter.

So the free tier is for auditioning voices. It is not for anything that goes in front of a customer.

How credits decide your bill

Every ElevenCreative product draws from one monthly credit pool, so spending credits on music leaves fewer for dubbing. The published monthly tiers, checked October 13, 2026, run as follows.

  • Free - $0, 10,000 credits, about 10 minutes of speech, no commercial licence, extra minutes listed at $0.36.
  • Starter - $6 a month, 30,000 credits, about 30 minutes, commercial licence, instant voice cloning, Dubbing Studio.
  • Creator - $22 a month, 121,000 credits, about 121 minutes, 1 professional voice clone, 30 instant-clone voice slots.
  • Pro - $99 a month, 600,000 credits, about 600 minutes, 44.1kHz PCM audio output via the API.
  • Scale - $299 a month, 1.8M credits, about 1,800 minutes, 3 professional voice clones.
  • Business - $990 a month, 6M credits, about 6,000 minutes, 10 professional voice clones.
  • Enterprise - custom pricing and credits, DPA and SLA terms, BAAs for HIPAA customers, custom SSO.

Annual billing is described on the pricing page as two months free: you pay for 10 months. The page lists the monthly equivalents as $5 on Starter, $18.33 on Creator, $82.50 on Pro, $249.17 on Scale and $825 on Business.

The credit costs are where forecasts fall apart. The pricing FAQ lists them as approximate per-product rates, and they are not close to each other.

Text to speech costs 1 credit per character. Speech to text costs 330 credits a minute, music 900 a minute, sound effects 200 per generation, and voice changer and voice isolator 1,000 a minute each.

Dubbing is the expensive one: 2,000 credits a minute automatic with a watermark, 3,000 without, 5,000 through Dubbing Studio with a watermark, and 10,000 without. All figures from the pricing FAQ, checked October 13, 2026.

Run the arithmetic against those published rates and the tiers look different. By our own calculation, Creator's 121,000 credits is about 121 minutes of speech.

The same allowance is roughly 134 minutes of generated music, or about 12 minutes of clean Dubbing Studio output. One product can eat the whole month.

Two published rules soften it. Unused credits roll over for up to two months, capped at three times the monthly quota, and rollover does not apply to the free plan.

The rollover stops the moment the subscription does. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits at the end of the cycle, per the same FAQ.

If you have read our note on how email tools count subscribers, contacts or sends, the lesson transfers exactly. The unit on the slider decides the bill, not the headline price.

Voice agents and Ads Engine: the two marketing-facing pieces

ElevenAgents has its own plan table and its own unit. Per the agents pricing page, checked October 13, 2026, included call minutes and concurrent calls run as follows.

  • Free - 15 call minutes, 4 concurrent calls.
  • Starter - 75 call minutes, 6 concurrent calls.
  • Creator - 275 call minutes, 10 concurrent calls.
  • Pro - 1,238 call minutes, 20 concurrent calls.
  • Scale - 3,738 call minutes, 30 concurrent calls.
  • Business - 12,375 call minutes, 40 concurrent calls.

Overage here is flat and readable. Additional call minutes are listed at $0.080, text messages at $0.003 each, and burst pricing at $0.160 a minute when you exceed your concurrency limit.

Two costs sit outside that table. LLM usage is billed separately and varies by the model you pick, and ElevenLabs charges nothing extra for telephony, but your own provider bills you directly.

If you are weighing an agent against a person answering, the economics in our note on paying for ads and letting the leads ring out are the right starting point, and our Quo review covers the business phone side.

Ads Engine is the newest piece and the one paid-media teams ask about. Its product page describes pulling existing creatives from Google and Meta, localizing them across 50+ languages, then pushing them back ready to run.

The page says it translates Google Search headlines and descriptions and fits them to each platform's character limits, adapts static image ads with localized text overlays, and dubs video with Dubbing v2 while preserving the speaker's voice.

Ad fatigue alerts, which flag creatives losing performance, are listed as available on the Scale plan and above.

The honest caveat: Ads Engine publishes no self-serve price. The page states it is available on Enterprise plans and the only call to action is "Contact sales", so treat it as a procurement conversation, not an afternoon experiment.

What users report about ElevenLabs

We did not run the product. We read the vendor documentation and public review profiles instead, and the public picture is sharply split.

On Trustpilot, read October 13, 2026, ElevenLabs showed a TrustScore of 3.1 out of 5 across 1,180 reviews: 48% at five stars, 5% at four, 3% at three, 6% at two and 38% at one star.

A rating that polarized usually means the product works and something around it does not. That is roughly what the written reviews say.

The praise clusters on output: natural, expressive voices, an interface people find easy, and cloning and dubbing results reviewers call impressive. Several also report fast email replies once they reach a human.

The complaints cluster on commerce, not quality. Recurring themes are credits consumed faster than expected, unexpected recurring charges, difficulty cancelling, and chatbots that stand between the customer and a person.

Read against the published terms, the credit complaints are consistent with the documented rules rather than evidence of a fault. Credits really do expire on cancellation, and dubbing really can cost 10,000 credits a minute.

The practical takeaway is dull but useful: open the credit-cost FAQ before you subscribe, not after the first invoice.

What it does not replace, and what to pair it with

We have not reviewed ElevenLabs' direct rivals, so we are not going to rank them here. What we can say is which jobs it does not do, because that is where budgets get double-counted.

It does not measure anything. If you are producing audio ads, you still need to know which calls and forms the spend produced, which is the job in our WhatConverts review.

It does not send anything. Narration does not reach a list on its own; an email platform does that, and our GetResponse review and GetResponse vs Brevo comparison cover the usual starting points.

It does not build the page the ad lands on. That is a landing-page job, covered in our Leadpages review.

It does not help you get found. Audio assets do not fix organic visibility; our Semrush review and our guide to tools that grow website traffic handle that side.

And it does not publish. If you are producing audio for a newsletter or podcast, our beehiiv review covers the distribution layer.

Frequently asked questions

Is ElevenLabs free?

There is a free plan at $0 a month with 10,000 credits, roughly 10 minutes of text to speech (pricing page, checked October 13, 2026). It does not include a commercial licence, so it cannot be used for published ads.

How much does ElevenLabs cost per month?

Listed monthly prices are $6 Starter, $22 Creator, $99 Pro, $299 Scale and $990 Business, with Enterprise custom (checked October 13, 2026). Annual billing is described as paying for 10 months, priced at $5, $18.33, $82.50, $249.17 and $825 a month.

What is a credit on ElevenLabs?

A credit is the shared unit every creative product spends. Text to speech costs about 1 credit per character, speech to text 330 a minute, music 900 a minute, and dubbing 2,000 to 10,000 a minute depending on mode (pricing FAQ, October 13, 2026).

Do unused ElevenLabs credits roll over?

Yes, on paid plans. The pricing FAQ states unused credits roll over for up to two months, so a balance can reach at most three times the monthly quota. Rollover does not apply to the free plan, and downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits.

How much do ElevenLabs voice agents cost?

Agents bill in call minutes on the same plan prices, from 15 included minutes on Free to 12,375 on Business. Extra minutes are listed at $0.080 and text messages at $0.003, with LLM and telephony charged separately (agents pricing page, October 13, 2026).

Can ElevenLabs localize my Google and Meta ads?

That is what Ads Engine is for. Its page describes pulling creatives from Google and Meta, localizing text, image and video across 50+ languages, and pushing them back. No self-serve price is published; it is listed as an Enterprise plan feature (checked October 13, 2026).

Bottom line

ElevenLabs earns its reputation on output and loses goodwill on billing. If you produce audio or video every week, Creator or Pro will pay for itself in avoided studio time.

If you produce it occasionally, start free, confirm the voices suit the brand, then buy a single Starter month when a campaign actually needs the commercial licence.

Whatever tier you pick, open the credit-cost FAQ first and multiply it against the work you plan to do. The headline price is not the number that decides your bill.
